DCS Airspace introduces a realistic tactical map, enhanced AWACS track symbology, six identification states, and a new ATO-based Mode 3 classification option for more realistic airspace control in DCS World.
A More Realistic Tactical Radar Display
The latest DCS Airspace update introduces a redesigned tactical map with more realistic colors, bringing the radar display closer to the visual conventions of real-world air surveillance and AWACS operations. The updated map improves the presentation of the tactical picture while keeping essential information clear and accessible to controllers.
Enhanced Track Identification
Track identification has been expanded with a new system featuring six distinct identification states:
- Friendly — positively identified as friendly.
- Assumed Friendly — assessed as friendly, but not positively confirmed.
- Unknown — the track's identity remains undetermined.
- Pending — identification is still in progress.
- Hostile — identified as hostile.
- Suspect — the track is suspected of being hostile but has not been confirmed as such.
Realistic Radar Track Symbology
Each identification state is represented by a dedicated radar symbol designed to make the tactical picture easier to read and interpret. The new track symbols follow realistic AWACS identification conventions, supporting a clearer and more consistent radar picture during DCS World multiplayer missions, training scenarios, and virtual squadron operations. To learn more about the meaning of each symbol and how DCS Airspace represents track identification, see the DCS Airspace Radar Display Symbology Guide.
New ATO Mode 3 Match Classification
A new server-side option, ATO Mode 3 Match Classification, adds another layer of integration between DCS Airspace's identification system and the Air Tasking Order (ATO) from DCS AOC Tools (learn more about DCS AOC Tools).
When Realistic Identification is enabled and an ATO is available, DCS Airspace can automatically classify tracks whose active Mode 3 code matches a code assigned in the ATO, provided they do not have an active Mode 4 response. Depending on the server configuration, these tracks can be classified as Assumed Friendly or Unknown.
An active Mode 4 response always results in a Friendly classification.
This distinction is important: an ATO Mode 3 match can support an assessment of a track, but it does not constitute positive identification. By keeping Assumed Friendly separate from confirmed Friendly status, DCS Airspace helps virtual AWACS and GCI controllers maintain a more realistic identification process.
The new option is configured server-side, allowing mission organizers and server administrators to choose the behavior that best suits their operational procedures.
Interface Improvements
The update also includes minor user-interface adjustments designed to make better use of available screen space. These refinements help keep the tactical picture readable while controllers manage track identification and airspace surveillance.
Free Real-Time AWACS and GCI for DCS World
DCS Airspace is part of the free Combined Ops suite for DCS World. It provides a web-based real-time radar and airspace-control workstation for virtual AWACS, GCI, and ATC operations, with features designed to support organized multiplayer missions and virtual squadrons.
This update continues to improve the realism and usability of the tactical display, combining more authentic track symbology with clearer identification states and configurable ATO-based classification.
